How to plan for CA Inter for just passed CA Foundation

Written by CA Satish Jalan | Jan 6, 2021 12:44:29 PM

The second step of the CA Examination is the CA Intermediate level which is very different from the Foundation level in terms of the number of subjects and the difficulty. It demands a lot of hard work, dedication, patience, and most importantly CONSISTENCY to clear the examination in one shot.

It is said that - If you fail to plan well, you are planning to fail”.

In this Blog, we have answered the most Frequently Asked Questions by CA Intermediate aspirants.

Which are the Subjects to be studied at CA Intermediate Level?

CA Intermediate level comprised of 8 subjects divided into Group I and Group II, each group having four subjects as mentioned below:

CA Inter Group I:

  • Accounting
  • Corporate and Other Laws
  • Cost and Management Accounting
  • Taxation

CA Inter Group II:

  • Advanced Accounting
  • Auditing and Assurance
  • Enterprise Information Systems and Strategic Management
  • Financial Management and Economics for Finance

How to decide whether to appear for both the groups or one group at a time?

The ICAI allows you to appear one group or both groups at a time. It is always advisable to prepare for both groups at a time to pass your CA Exam at the earliest. However,  you may decide to appear for a single group due to time or any other constraints.

Say, your score is as follows:

Aggregate of Group I - 210 and
Aggregate of Group II - 195
40+ in every subject individually
Total aggregate score is 405/800 (more than 50%)  in both the groups.

If you appear in both groups, you will pass this exam due to set-off effect. Whereas,  if you have appeared in a single  group at a time, you will pass in Group I (as aggregate score is more than 50%) and you will have to re-appear for Group II (as the aggregate score is less than 50%).

What should be your Average Study time per day?

After your CA Foundation results are out, you can appear for CA Intermediate earliest after 9 months of registering in CA Intermediate with ICAI.

The following table illustrates the detailed preparation time of the Intermediate exams in 3 cases-

- If you appear for Both Groups
- If you appear for Group I only
- If you appear for Group II only

The workings have been prepared by assuming that you will start your classes right from the next month after your result. E.g. If your CA Foundation result has come out in Mid January, then you have to start your classes right from February.

 Please Note:

  • If you pass CA Foundation in January, you must complete all your classes within 7 months i.e., by August to appear in CA Intermediate in November.
  • Similarly, if you pass CA foundation in July, you must complete all your classes by February to appear in CA Intermediate in May.
  • As per this timeline, you are required to do the classes for 6 days a week i.e., on an average 25 days per month and 1 day per week should be devoted for Revision and for referring ICAI Study Material of the topics that have been covered during the week for every subject.
  • If you are preparing for a single group as per this timeline, you will be able to complete your syllabus in 5.5 months. Hence, you may be a bit flexible in doing the classes and you will also get ample time to revise the subjects.
  • The above timeline has been prepared assuming that you are taking classes for every subject. However, if you are not taking classes for any particular subject then you should do an equivalent amount of self-study for that subject as per the timeline to keep the preparation for all subjects at par.

* If you have college during any of the timings, you may adjust these time slots to suit your college schedule. Ensure that you do at least three classes everyday to complete the syllabus on time.

Note:

  • You are advised to study Accounting during the first 3.5 months and then start Advanced Accounting during the remaining 3.5 months in the same time slots to avoid stress and maintain a balance.
  • This timetable has been prepared assuming that each subject comprises 70 classes on an average.
  • However, the number of classes may vary (may be more or less) depending on the subjects. So, once you finish the classes of a particular subject (which has less classes) according to this schedule, you must utilise that time slot to complete the additional classes of other subjects (which has more classes). For example, the number of classes in Audit may be upto 50 classes. So, once you complete them in say 6 months, you should utilise the same time slot to complete additional classes of other subjects, say EIS-SM.
  • If you are unable to complete the classes of any subject as per this time schedule, you should do 2 classes on Sundays to make for the difference.
  • Along with your classes, you should continue to revise and practice the chapters covered in the lectures and also refer to the ICAI Study Material of the chapters simultaneously to ensure the complete coverage of the syllabus and boost your confidence level. This may be done on Sundays or everyday after your classes as per time availability.
