Written by CA Satish Jalan | Apr 2, 2022 11:28:28 AM

Are you looking for a job, but not getting any positive response?

It can be due to many reasons. One of them could be, that you are not applying properly.

Not all of us have someone to guide us on this journey.

Here, I will be telling you, some steps that will help you to bag a perfect job for yourself.

Step 1: Skillset

First, identify the area of your interest. It’s very important to understand it because then you can develop your skills based on the basis of it.

It will make your job interesting, as you will be doing what you like.

Each one of you has different interests, and developing skills based on them will help us in our professional growth.

Do you know, there are 2 types of skillset? One is professional, whereas the other one is Personal.

Professional skills include copywriting, data analysis, computer programming, etc. It can be developed on the basis of your interest.

Along with professional skills, personal skills are also very important.

Personal skills are also known as soft skills like integrity, teamwork, creativity, critical thinking, leadership, and time management. These skills will not only help you in your personal but also in your professional life.

Step 2: List of Companies

Once you have identified your interest, you can start making a list of companies where you can apply. And also can develop your skills on the basis of them.

Within a company, there are different sectors where you can work. And, when you know where you want to work, that acts as an add-on benefit to your CV.

Also, by making a list of the company you will be selecting those companies as per the sector, where your expertise is.

This will save you time.

Step 3: Build your CV

Building your CV is very important.

You must have heard this phrase, “First impression is the last impression”.

Just like this phrase, whenever you apply for any job, it’s your CV that is making the first impression for you on them.

Always build your CV strategically. It doesn’t mean only using creative writing & colors but mentioning the skills & achievements along with your achievements. This helps you to stand out in comparison to other applicants.

If you are confused about it, then Google it. You will get enough recommendations, which you can implement while building one for yourself.

Also, always mention your work experience along with the expertise you are in.

Step 4: List of Contacts

Building contacts is as necessary as your building your skills. Nowadays, most of the vacancies are filled within, just by contact references.

As it serves as an easy source of trust.

So, don’t hesitate to ask for help or a reference. Seeking help is not bad.

You can make a list of people whom you can outreach too. For example, your friends, relatives, friends of friends, seniors, colleagues, and many more such people.

Reach out to them, and for any reference.

If they don't have any vacancies now, then they might reach you in the future.

Step 5: Online Job Profiles

Having an online Job profile is very necessary in today’s digital world.

In recent times, the online presence of your CV helps you in landing a job soon.

You can create your profile in all the job portals. I personally will recommend Linkedin, other than this you can create a profile on Indeed, CAJobportals, Naukri, Glassdoor, Iimjobs, Careerbuilder, Simplyhired, and many more sites.

Apart from creating an online presence, you have to keep updating your profile in it, from time to time. And, when you outreach any company, make sure you are not making any grammatical & spelling errors in your writing. If you made any such mistake, it will affect your credibility and can affect your success rate.

Step 6: Apply Directly on Companies' Websites

Not all job openings are listed on the company's website, so it’s preferred you reach out to them via, mail.

What happens is that if this will help you to create personal contact with the company, you will get a direct response from them. They might reject you by saying they don’t have any vacancies, but in the future, if they do have any openings then they will remember you and can try to contact you.

You can search about your ideal company through Google or can follow them on Linkedin and get more details about them.

Step 7: Cover Letter

A cover letter is a summarized form of your qualification, work experience, passion, achievements & qualities for the role you are applying for.

It should always be provided along with the resume.

Most of you are making this common mistake of not providing a cover letter with your resume. By your cover letter, you demonstrate your passion, writing skills, and dedication to your work.

Always share your contact details along with a professional signature at the end of the letter. This will help you to outstand all the other applicants.

Step 8: Test Preparation

Nowadays, the process of hiring has also changed. The interviewer test the capabilities of the applicants via, a test. It can be an online or an offline test, as per the employer's policy.

Mainly, they ask for logical reasoning, critical thinking, or computer skills-related questions, to test your credibility.

Also, how informative you are about the post and the company you are applying for.

You can prepare for it online, and search more about it.

It’s better to be prepared beforehand, and have some knowledge.

Step 9: Knowledge about the Company

The most common question, all the interviewees have to answer is, “Why do you want to join the company?”

So, it's necessary to have knowledge about the company's strengths, aims, and goals. To avoid unnecessary mistakes during the interview. If you have all this information, then your chances of getting the job will also increase.

Your answer will show, how much you are interested in that company.

You can get all this information by researching. Also, always focus on the positive aspects, and show your enthusiasm & interest in the job.

All this will help you to prepare for the interview and will give you the confidence to face any questions.

Step 10: Preparation for Interview

Along with the above steps, you also have to prepare for the interview.

Always prepare for the interview beforehand. For example, you can sit for a mock interview with your friend. This will help you to ease your nervousness, & will make you more confident. You should also dress accordingly for the job interview.

There are certain standards questions like what are your strengths & weaknesses, how you can prove yourself, and what is your aim in life? How do you see yourself down the line? What are your failures and how do you deal with them? & many more such questions that you have to prepare for the interview.

Along with this, you have to keep certain things in mind like paying attention during an interview and making eye contact with the interviewer, this shows your confidence.

Step 11: Follow-Ups

It can be confusing at times to decide when to follow up with the interviewers. But, it’s always recommended to ask them for the time being before leaving the room after the interview.

After this stipulated time, you can mail them, keeping it brief, and also expressing your excitement and interest in the post will help to leave a positive impact.

I will recommend you to not follow up more than twice because if they are not responding even after your first follow-up, it’s most likely that the position has been filled.

If you follow all these steps, you will surely see a positive outcome.

Hope, this helps you & if you want to share anything with me in relation to this, do comment down below your thoughts.
