Written by CA Satish Jalan | Jun 3, 2023 2:25:59 PM

CA Intermediate is a difficult stage in the CA career. There is a two-month wait for the results after passing the Intermediate exam. During this time, students must make the most of their time and avoid wasting it, especially if they want to become a CA.

Even if you pass the Intermediate exam on your first try, you cannot register for the CA Final or begin the three-year practical training. To be eligible for the Final course, additional training or programs are required.

As CA Intermediate Exam ended a few days back, students must be confused about how they should use time. So, today we are going to discuss, what can students do and how they should utilize their time after CA Intermediate Exams.

  • What Are the Two Different Situations of the CA Intermediate Students?
  1. Scenario 1.
  2. Scenario 2

For CA students, the first step is to conduct a self-evaluation, identifying the challenges encountered during preparation and identifying areas for improvement. Self-evaluation is essential for maintaining positive practices and correcting flaws. There are two types of students: those who have tried both groups and those who have only tried one.

1. What Are the Two Different Situations of the CA Intermediate Students?

Scenario 1.

For students who have only attempted one group:

Confident in Passing Group 1, Based on Self-Evaluation:

If you have completed the first group and are confident that you will pass it, you should begin preparing for the second group as soon as possible. Waiting until the results are released gives you only 3.5 months to study, revise, and take mock tests. You can begin your preparations after a 1 to 1.5-week break.

Confident in Some Subjects, Doubtful in Other Subjects:

If you have attempted the first group but are unsure about passing 1-2 subjects, in that case, you can plan your preparation for the second group so that you can finish both practical subjects before the results are announced. If you fail to clear the first group, you can target both groups for the following term.

Almost Sure that You Won't Be Able to Clear:

If you are certain that you will not pass the group, you should begin preparing for the first group again.

Scenario 2

For students who have taken both groups and are confident of passing, or who have taken group 1 in December 2022 and group 2 in May 2023.

Confident of Passing Exams of Both Groups:

If you are confident that you will pass both groups, do not waste any more time and apply for ICITSS training. After finishing the training, begin researching the firms and companies to which you should apply.

Confident in Few Subjects & Doubtful in Other Subjects:

If you are confident in some subjects but unsure about others, you should still apply for ICITSS training. Meeting new people during the training will broaden your knowledge and provide insights into different approaches to preparation.

You’re Sure that You Won't Be Able to Clear Both the Groups:

When students are certain they will not pass the exams, they should re-study for them, focusing on the areas and subjects in which they lack confidence.

2. How to Utilize Time After CA Intermediate Exams?

Consider the following steps to make the most of your time after the CA Intermediate exams:

Enroll in ITT and OT programs:
After passing the Intermediate examination, whether in the first or second group, you will be eligible for three years of practical training. It is recommended that you enroll in the Information Technology Training (ITT) and Orientation Training (OT) programs prior to taking the Intermediate exams. This way, you can secure a place in the training batches and finish the programs before the CA Intermediate results are released.

Prepare your CV/resume:
Understand the importance of being ready for the upcoming challenges and opportunities after passing the first group of Intermediate exams. Prepare your CV or resume in advance. This will allow you to effectively showcase your skills, experiences, and achievements when applying for articleship positions.

Research and choose firms:
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India gives students plenty of time to choose the firms where they will be doing their articleship training. However, due to the high level of competition, obtaining a practical training position at a desired Chartered Accountants firm can be difficult. Conduct thorough research on potential firms and create a list of preferred companies to avoid wasting time after the exam results are announced.

Instil the habit of reading business newspapers:
Many students will enter the corporate world after passing the CA Intermediate exams. It is important for a CA  to stay up to date on the latest amendments and developments. Make it a habit to read business newspapers every day if you want to be a successful CA. This way, you'll stay up to date on current events and be aware of any relevant updates or changes.

Contribute articles to the Students Journal:
Every month, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) sends the Students Journal to all students. Rather than simply reading the articles, take the initiative to write your own.

Make the most of your time after the CA Intermediate exams and don't waste any precious moments. Engage in productive activities and keep your knowledge up to date. Clearing the CA Intermediate exams elevates you to the status of CA Finalist, with high expectations placed on you.

This is an excellent time for growth and learning, so take advantage of it with zeal and dedication. Make the most of your time in order to maximize your potential and prepare for the challenges ahead.
